On June 13, 2020, Dawn M. Jones was installed at the 58th president of the then 52,300-member State Bar of Georgia, becoming the second person of color and fourth woman to serve in that position. Dawn, a former ICU registered nurse for 14 years, attended Georgia State University College of Law’s part-time evening program. Graduating in 2000, Dawn was admitted to the Georgia Bar and began her legal career at an insurance defense firm in Atlanta. She also served as Associate General Counsel for the Grady Health System. And, for ten years, Dawn applied her medical training and background to defend manufacturers of pharmaceutical products, tobacco, automotive, and other consumer goods in nation-wide product liability, toxic tort, and mass tort litigation at King & Spalding LLP. In May of 2014, Dawn established The Firm of Dawn M. Jones, LLC to obtain justice for catastrophically injured clients and their families resulting from medical malpractice, wrongful death, trucking accidents, nursing home abuse and neglect, and other serious torts. In addition to running her own firm, Dawn actively serves on boards, including GSU College of Law’s Board of Visitors and UVA School of Nursing Dean’s Advisory Board. Besides serving in State Bar of Georgia leadership for 12 years, Dawn served as a board member of several other organizations, including the Institute for Continuing Judicial Education, the Federal Defender Program, Inc., the Atlanta Bar Association Executive Committee, the Atlanta Bar Association Foundation, and the Gate City Bar Association Foundation, among others. In addition to being a past president of the State Bar of Georgia, Dawn also held several other significant leadership roles in the past, including president of the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys, president of the Atlanta Legal Aid Society, Inc.,  president of the Georgia State University College of Law Alumni Council, and chair of the State Bar of Georgia Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee for District 5, among other roles.  Since becoming a lawyer, Dawn has received numerous honors and awards, including the 2022 Ben F. Johnson Public Service Award from Georgia State University College of Law, the 2021 Gertrude E. Rush Award from the National Bar Association, the 2021 Griffin Bell Leadership Award from the State Bar of Georgia Young Lawyers Division, the 2018 Alumni Achievement Award from the University of Virginia School of Nursing, the 2017 Commitment to Equality Award from the State Bar of Georgia Committee to Promote Inclusion in the Profession, the 2015 Thomas R. Burnside Excellence in Bar Leadership Award from the State Bar of Georgia, and the 2012 Attorney A. T. Walden Legacy Award from the Gate City Bar Association Judicial Section, among others. And she has been recognized annually as a Georgia Super Lawyer® in plaintiff’s personal injury, medical malpractice matters since 2021. Dawn, a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. since 1988, earned a MS degree in Critical Care Nursing from Georgetown University, and a BS degree in Nursing from the University of Virginia.
